Message from the Director

Susan Cleyle, DirectorOur department continues to evolve and adapt to the growing demand for educational technologies that help educators engage learners. In addition to making courses and resources available online, increasing numbers of faculty members and instructors on all Memorial campuses are incorporating technologies into their classrooms.

This growth means we are increasingly serving on-campus students in addition to our distance students. However, distance education remains a fundamental part of our history and of our current mandate to serve all citizens of the province.

An increasing number of on-campus students are also turning to online courses to complement their schedules and provide them with added flexibility. For example, each semester on the St. John's campus nearly 3,000 students take at least one online course in addition to their on-campus courses.

In supporting both distance and on-campus learners, students and faculty will begin to see our use of the term ‘online education’ in reference to the courses and related services we provide because they are delivered online, no matter where the student is located.

Being the only university in this province, Memorial continues to thrive and grow, and so does DELTS. We have a renewed commitment to connect Memorial’s faculties and departments, campuses and communities through our online education offerings, our support for educator development, and our responsibility to advance and support the effective use of technologies for teaching.
