Current Issues in Rural Education

The purpose of this course is to provide a forum for critical and reflective inquiries into the issues and questions that affect the provision of education and schooling in rural areas. The primary context of the course is Newfoundland and Labrador. The course provides an opportunity for participants to share their understanding of the challenges, opportunities and dynamics of learning and teaching in small schools and in remote and isolated areas. There is an expectation that students will make an original contribution that will increase the existing knowledge base about rural education in Newfoundland and Labrador.
NOTE: Students must have first-hand knowledge and experience of small rural schools. Preferably, students taking this course are currently teaching in small rural schools in the province Prerequisite(s): Must meet the admission requirements to a graduate program in education.
